#AskMeOnMonday Episode 1 | Staying motivated to work “on” your business

Welcome to my very first response video in the #AskMeOnMonday series. In this week’s episode, I answer the following question from Karen Robertson of Pram Fitness:

“As a small business owner, some days it’s hard to be motivated to work “on” the business while I’m so busy working “in” the business. What is your advice for people who work without a team to stay on track to the end goal?”

Top tips from this week

The definition of working “on” your business includes things like setting strategic goals, business planning, sales and marketing activities – anything that is future focussed.

It’s hard to stay motivated to work on the strategic stuff if you haven’t properly defined your vision – why you started the business in the first place and what you are trying achieve or what problem you are trying to solve for your target market.

Once you have articulated your vision, then you can define your strategic goals. Make sure they are specific and measureable, so that you know when you have achieved them. Then write down the specific actions and tasks that will help you achieve your goals.

Then, and this is the key to keeping motivated, spend some time every day working on those activities and tasks.

One of my favourite apps to help with motivation to get things done, whether that be strategic work or anything that is a bit challenging, is Be Focused – Focus Timer & Goal Tracker for work.
